Lisa Tognon

MAY 2025

QUEBEC, CANADA

As a Quebec artist, I’ve been working with materials for over 30 years, mainly with paper and inks which I use in a multitude of ways. I have exhibited in Quebec, Canada and Europe, in many galleries and museums. My work can be found in many public and private art collections. I’ve been awarded several prizes, including “Artiste montréalaise” for the Entretiens Jacques Cartier, awarded by the city of Lyon, and more recently nominated in 2023 as artist of the year by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. I create abstract compositions that evoke archetypes, often referring to natural phenomena such as volcanic eruptions, wind, water, fire wind, water, fire, snow, tides, etc.) as well as to the traces of our civilization in writing, signs, symbols, emblems, etc. I’m looking forward to collaborating with writer Claire Varin, who draws her inspiration from animals.

A Sample of Past Work

Nature is at the heart of being. These three works testify to the diversity of forms captured in nature’s infinity. At three different times in my life, they echo the sumptuousness of nature and the protection we all owe it.

Lisa’s Do Picho Project

These last few years, I’ve been getting closer to art as a way of contributing to the effort to safeguard humanity in relation to our natural ecosystems, wetlands and forests, and I’m inspired by the protective actions taken on their behalf by citizens aware of this wealth. I’d like to highlight the work of the organizations that are fighting for the environment of Palace Del Rei, particularly in the case of the Altri paper mill, by creating a work of art made of handmade mulberry paper inspired by the nature of this area and the citizens who wish to protect it.

The glass façade of O Picho’s residence is a surface where the suspension of large works of mulberry paper, backlight, will magnify the work’s purpose. The night will be the ally of these luminous projections.

The fauna and flora of the surrounding area will be present in this creation, notably through the impressions made on the mulberry paper surfaces by schoolchildren or walkers on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela who will be invited to take part. A biologist, ecologist or someone familiar with the damaging impact of pulp and paper mill construction in this area will offer a strolling tour during which participants will become aware of the beauty and scientific need to protect the site.

With my assistance, they will create small amulets of protection as found in many ancient civilizations, for plants, animals or insects that may be threatened by such projects. The participants’ work will be used to create larger amulets, which I will do with inspiration from both the discovery of the natural environment surrounding the residence of Galicia’s cultural landmarks, and from meetings with local citizens.
