Jolie & Ben

BACKGROUND

American multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, producer, and singer-songwriter and co-founder of the Canadian band The Be Good Tanyas, Jolie Holland has been on the road since the early 2000s. She has released eight of her own albums and contributed to countless others. Her work has been described as a syncretization of American roots, with rock and experimental elements. She’s been in the studio with Booker T, Lucinda Williams, TV On The Radio and Thor Harris; and shared stages with Big Thief, St. Vincent, Elbow, and Mavis Staples. Her collaborators have included Hal Willner, Kronos Quartet, and Boots Riley. Lou Reed once told her, “I could have listened to you all night.”

Ben Boye is a musical tinkerer who searches for new and interesting musical experiences both on and off the stage. Onstage, he is forever interested in improvisational encounters with other musicians, whether it be in explicitly experimental improvisational contexts or hidden away within the deep recesses of songs. Offstage, he designs and builds instruments and effects that prioritize randomness and interaction with the natural world. For example, his Almanac synthesizer module converts the positions of the sun, moon, and planets into control voltages that can be used to modulate parameters on synthesizers and other electronic instruments. He has played keyboards and a heavily modified custom autoharp with many people across the world in many different contexts. JOLIE´S AND BEN´S DO PICHO PROJECT

During their “Total Eclipse Residency” at Do Picho, Jolie Holland and Ben Boye will create material for their musical project called “Parade Gloss”, an idea which is embodied through Jolie´s song “Feet on the Ground”, from her 2023 album “Haunted Mountain”. The open-ended concept of “Parade Gloss” is anti-patriarchal dance music, with lyrics that seek to imagine ways of being outside of patriarchy. The collage-like musical production incorporates some recognizable elements of dance music like synths, drum machines and bass, using experimental production and found sounds.. Jolie and Ben will collaborate with Galician musicians to add elements to the dance tracks and beats, and to compose lyrics on the themes of culture beyond the strictures of imagined male supremacy.

Boye and Holland will perform a composed and improvised set through the solar eclipse (that Galicia will experience on August 12th at sunset, between 19h30 and 21:30, with approximately 50 minutes of total eclipse), with an emphasis on minimal sound so as to center the audience’s own experience. The performance will incorporate drone, viola, voice, synthesizers and modified electric autoharp mediated by The Almanac, a synth module designed by Boye, which converts the real-time positions of the sun, moon and planets into parameters of sound. It will be a musical and technological expression for standing in presence and awe, witnessing the pivotal moments of eclipse.
